Research Shows Dog Owners Are Living Healthier Lives
Man's Best Friend Makes an Excellent Workout Buddy
Tails are wagging all over America right now! Why? It’s because owning a dog is associated with better physical and mental health. Sorry cat people!
Whether you own a giant Husky or a small Chihuahua, your beloved pooch is there by your side making you healthy and strong. Go ahead and spoil your doggo with milkbones, belly rubs, and rides in the car. They deserve all that love!
So what is it about dog ownership that’s so good for you? Let’s look at the research!
Dogs Get You Moving
People with dogs are usually more active than those who don’t have a pet at home. They go on frequent walks and play fetch in the park. Plus, it takes some muscle to lug around those heavy bags of dog food.
Research backs up this idea. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found the odds of a dog owner getting enough physical activity in their day was 57% to 77% higher compared with those who do not own a dog.
The increased activity levels are found in all areas of dog ownership. You’ll burn calories by feeding, grooming, and even simply standing up to let your dog do their business in the backyard. More movement in your day means more blood flow to your muscles and less joint stiffness. You’ll also reduce your risk for heart-related problems.
Dogs Improve Your Sleep
Okay, the statement that “dogs improve sleep” isn’t true 100% of the time. Anyone who has a dog that gets up to bark in the middle of the night or frequently goes to the bathroom will tell you that much. However, on average, the increase in walking time results in a sounder, more peaceful sleep.
Better sleep is especially true for those who walk or exercise outside with their dog. Psychology Today backs up that claim:
Being exposed to natural light by walking outside in the morning helps entrain a strong circadian rhythm, which promotes healthy sleep. Exercise is also associated with stress reduction and physical well-being, both of which could be pathways to sleeping better.
Going around the block or to a local nature preserve to walk your dog can be a great way to increase quality shuteye time. You may also feel better protected with a guard dog in your bed. As long as Fido isn’t barking at the moon at midnight, you can expect a better night’s sleep!
Dogs Connect You With Others
Romantic comedies often show meet-cutes where two people with dogs come together. Real life isn’t always as charming. Still, you’ll connect with others when you have a dog.
Dogs are social animals, and as a result, they encourage their owners to be more outgoing as well. You’ll take your pet to the dog park or puppy classes and meet others in your area. You’ll form a bond with the groomer. You’ll get a ton of extra followers on Instagram when you post cute dog pics. No matter what, having a four-legged companion will work wonders for your social life!
Dogs Lower Your Stress Levels
Life goes a mile a minute, and it’s hard to keep up with it all. It’s no wonder why 33% of people feel “extreme stress” according to the American Institute of Stress.
If you’re in that boat, then it may be time to get a dog. Harvard Health reports:
Dog owners are less prone to bouts of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Simply petting your dog can make you feel less stressed.
Your dog will provide unconditional love and support. Every time they look up at you with puppy dog eyes, you’ll get a boost of endorphins and dopamine. It’s hard to feel down when you have a faithful friend waiting for you at home.
Dogs Help Your Gut Health (Seriously)
This benefit of owning a dog is the most surprising. Research from the American Gastrological Association (AGA) found a link between early exposure to dogs and lower risk for Crohn’s disease. Anyone who grew up with a dog between the ages of 5 and 15 may have a healthier gut microbiome than others.
So if your kid is asking for a dog for Christmas this year, you may want to consider saying “yes!” Tell them Santa came through because he wants them to have a healthy gut. Just expect a lot of confused looks as a result!
Sending Love to Cats, Too!
Cat people may be feeling kind of left out of the conversation. Not to worry! Your furry friend is also providing value to your health and happiness. After all, one look at a silly kitty video online, and we all instantly feel happy. How can you not smile?!
Dog or cat…you could be feeling inspired to get a pet of your own. Luckily, there are millions of animals in shelters right now, just waiting to be adopted! Find a shelter near you.
