Skipped a Workout? Let’s Talk About It (Without the Guilt Trip)
Missing a Workout Shouldn't Cause Guilt
Please tell me I’m not alone in this—have you ever planned to work out, then suddenly your couch, a cozy blanket, and Love is Blind started calling your name? Same. Whether you're on your period, feeling low-energy, or just not in the mood, skipping a workout every now and then is totally normal.
But here’s the kicker: even when we know it’s okay, that little voice in our head still whispers, “Ugh, you’re being lazy.” That’s not your truth talking—that’s fitness culture being way too loud.
Why We Feel Guilty for Taking a Break
You’ve probably seen all those “no days off” quotes or people bragging about their 500-day workout streak. But guess what? That mindset usually benefits companies trying to sell you supplements or apps—not your mental or physical health.
Fitness culture puts a ton of pressure on us to be perfect. And if you already lean toward perfectionism (hi, recovering perfectionist here), skipping a workout can feel like a personal failure. The result? You end up feeling anxious, guilty, and sometimes too overwhelmed to even start again. It’s like a cycle: miss one workout → feel bad → avoid the next one → feel worse → rinse and repeat.
Sound familiar? Yeah, me too. But here’s how I broke the cycle—and how you can too.
1. Catch Those Negative Thoughts
Let’s say you missed the gym today. That’s a fact. But if your brain turns that into “I’m lazy” or “I’ll never reach my goals,” that’s your inner critic talking—not the truth.
Here’s what I do: when that voice pops up, I stop and ask, “What would I say to my best friend if she was feeling this way?” I bet I’d remind her of all the other responsible things she does every day. So do that for yourself, too. Be your own hype girl!
2. Rest Is Actually Productive
I know it feels like doing nothing, but rest is low-key one of the most powerful tools in your fitness toolbox. When we rest, our muscles heal, our energy resets, and our motivation starts to come back.
Once, I pushed myself through a workout even though I was exhausted—and surprise, I ended up tweaking my back and needing more time off. Lesson learned. Now, I remind myself that a couple of rest days won’t ruin my progress. In fact, they might even make me stronger.
3. Trust Your Reasons
If you skipped a workout, you probably had a good reason—maybe you were tired, busy, or mentally drained. Instead of beating yourself up, take a second to think about why you made that choice. Then own it.
One of my favorite tricks? I tell myself, “I’m not quitting—I’m choosing recovery.” That shift in mindset makes a big difference.
You Can Fill Wrinkles At Home (Here’s How!)
According to Dr. John Layke — a husband, father, and Beverly Hills beauty expert — you can look and feel up to 10 years younger, using a simple, do-it-yourself trick.
Dr. Layke has created a short video where he explains his beauty secret from beginning to end (complete with instructions), so you can try it for yourself at home.
If you'd like to try this 60-second beauty trick at home, you can view the instructional video below. It's a fascinating presentation, even if you don't have wrinkles.
4. Don’t “Make Up” Workouts
Let’s say you skipped Monday’s workout. Please don’t try to double up on Tuesday to make up for it. That turns exercise into a punishment—and girl, you deserve better than that.
Fitness should feel good. Fun, even! If you're constantly behind on workouts and trying to “catch up,” it starts to feel like homework you forgot to do. Instead, just pick up where you left off. You didn’t fail—you’re just being flexible.
5. Ditch the Perfectionist Mindset
If you’ve ever thought, “I’ll start next week when I have time to do it right,” you’re not alone. That “all-or-nothing” thinking gets in the way big time. I’ve missed workouts just because I didn’t have time for my full routine… when honestly, a 10-minute walk would’ve helped more than nothing.
Healthy habits should fit into your life—not take over it. So don’t feel bad if you choose to rest, eat snacks, and recharge on the couch. That’s self-care, too.
Missing a workout doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It just means you’re human. One skipped day—or even a few—won’t undo your hard work. So next time guilt shows up, tell it, “Thanks, but I’m good,” and keep moving forward.
You’ve got this, and I’m cheering you on—whether you're hitting the gym or hitting "next episode" on Netflix.
